thinking geeky

I was looking for the robot cupcake holders since Mom suggested they'd be good for the nephew perhaps, and found some sciency cookie cutters. Which lead me over to the folks at Think Geek. *sigh* I always forget how much I love that shop, then stumble across it once again. Anywho, I found they have the plushie microbes I love. I'm going to get a few more for me and for Christmas gifts. (I like to squirrel things away as I find them. The trick it to remember I did so.)

Most of the stuff I found appeals to me morbid and absurd sense of humor. ;D I've seen this several times, and if I wasn't sure that it would creep me the hell out when i stumbled into the bathroom at night bleary eyed and semi conscious I would totally get the bloody shower curtain and matching bathmat. It might be worth it as something when I'm on my own for a second bath potentially.

From the bath into the kitchen! I found lots of ridiculous things that were appealing, and ordered them. But there were other things that appealed to my sense of whimsy that I couldn't prod myself it to getting. Like a knife block. If I didn't already have an amazing set of knives, this would definitely have to live on my counter. I really do love bowls and dishes. I have no clue why. But since I was a little munchkin I've loved it. And these drinking cups modeled after computer keys are hilarious! After the brain ice tray (and other more mundane shapes collected from IKEA) I don't know that I need more, but this fairy princess wand one is rather amazing, as well as the swords one. (Hint hint for presents for me! I drink most things with lots of ice in them!)

I also love magnets. This one reminds me of Hook, with the note stabbed through the door! :D

I did have to break down for the cereal bowl. I love cereal, but the bowl will likely get more use than just that staple! :D

Now they also have a lovely Dr. Who section of things. Which is were I acquired a flashlight sonic screwdriver! Go me!

They also had this little tongue in cheek humorous nod to the show with the New New York shirt. It reminded me of one of the shirts I saw at the Supernatural NashCon vendors room. It was a I heart heart The Doctor. I've found variations of it, but none on black like that one. Ah well. I wouldn't have fit into the little girly capped sleeved thing anyway.

And they have little amusing Whovian keychains and a TARDIS cookie jar! YAY!

Ah sweet Think Geek, though there was nothing super crafty, there was a cookbook I felt I had to get. I do so love books and random things that require me making them. :D

Brillant day!

I had a fun day with a friend from high school. We have a very difficult time syncing schedules up in order to get together. It was lots of fun. I had errands I wanted to run and it wasn't too hard to ask her to come along. Granted they were places she enjoys: bookstore, craftstore, and Target. Hopefully it wasn't too boring.

I had a book to return that was gifted to me for my birthday last week, but I'd also just gotten it for myself. >_> He he. So since that store is a bit out of my way we looked around at stuff so I could spend the money. Got a few knitting books KnitWit by Katie Boyette (which I see she has a sequel coming out in the fall) and Knitting the Threads of Time by Nora Murphy. I also got a few amusing odds and ends.

This was facilitated by our discussion of my love of Batman and Robin things. KA had spotted a little Robin figure somewhere and hadn't gotten it. We deduced that I already had gotten it for myself and she was pleased. As proof of it and the awesomeness you can see it on my desk! Actually the take your place plaque was also a gift this year from Chez. She also got me a kite. Mum suggested we take it North for Kels' wedding. :) I think that is an excellent plan. *nods*

Anywho, I love having friends that share interests/passions with me since it makes for lively and entertaining discussions. Also excellent gift giving. While we were perusing the bookstore, KA spied an ice cube brain tray. It was instabuy for my birthday. :D I washed it and put it in the freezer as soon as I got home.

I have plans to gross out my parents tonight. Muwahahaha! I need something green to drink. Which I don't have. Maybe I'll drop one in Mum's water...

I also had to buy these for myself as they were ridiculously cute. I will likely not make cupcakes, but will find another use for them. Or maybe cupcakes. For when KA and I get together to marathon Dr. Who, as I discovered today she and her lifemate Bean are fans. This makes plans and plotting so much more entertaining for them now.

I got my copy of World of Geekcraft by Susan Beal today. I was flipping through and there are a few projects I'd like to do, or things that I can adapt to my likes/needs. I also came across Yarn Bombing by Mandy Moore and Leanne Prain. There were a few amusing project possibilities in there as well. Might have to get that one later down the road.

Overall it was a rather fabulous day and I hope that we can get together again once Bean comes home from Africa. :)

Cruisin' for crafts

So I was browsing Craftster for some help/ideas on knitting project bags. I want to make one for Chez for Christmas me thinks with one of the arts from Urban Threads. Came across these Cutie Pot Heads in the project header. They are really adorable. There was also a swap around a small tote bag. I think the project will work for me. And when I clicked through there was also one for a zippered pouch. I seem to always be in need of one of those. And I found some crazy cute shirts at the Craftster store.

I've noticed lately that I've been gravitating toward purple. Don't get me wrong still love the greens and blues, but purple seems to be making an appearance in my color palette. That being said the plaque craft on Urban Threads is something I want very much. Like exact replica. Purple and all.

Now I very much want to do something similar with one of the other awesome steampunk designs they had too. And one for Kt and her hubby for a house warming. I just need to find a quote/image that I like for them. There was one on Urban Threads, but I'm a bit undecided.

Now I've also found an image that I'd really really love to stencil on a teeshirt. Which I do often or at whim. It all started when Twilight first came out in theaters and I was working at the bookstore. I'm really not a fan, however I had co-worker friends that were all over the love-hate spectrum. Thus we decided instead of making shirts that mocked and would get us killed by the tween population we made sly amusing shirts. Or at least amusing to me. :D I'll have to post a picture or two after I touch mine up. I get a lot of wear out of it. I've painted a few shirts since then. I might use some of the techniques talked about in the Urban Threads stenciling tutorial too. We shall see.

Needs more sewing...

So I stumbled across a new website with awesome embroidery patterns. I mean these things are epically amazing!

Urban Threads is the website. I have a feeling I am going to have to invest in learning to sew past the basics since there are some really great little crafty project ideas on there. They have a really cute cup cozy pattern that I need to make. There's also a nice glass etching tutorial that I'll be using since I have a set of glasses I wanted to decorate and hadn't gotten around to googling for answers. :D

Mostly the site makes my little craft nerd heart sing with glee. I mean, come on! When I come across something that uses adorkable I know I've struck gold. I kind of want to make a cover for my Kindle with it. :)

Also, I love their yarn craft ones. They have a few, but I feel the need to make a tee shirt with this lovely little gem. I might even end up doing ones for knitting friends too since it is rather spectacular!

Mystery Project 3

I finally have made some head way with Project 3. I've stopped on Project 2, but should be picking it up again soon.

Project 3 has been causing great frustration. I spent two days last weekend trying to cast on and get started but it kept twisting up. :P

So this whole week there was no knitting so I could center myself and calm down. Then I spent some time last night trying to start and would get going and then screw up the pattern. Finally today I've been able to do a lot of knitting on it. Enough that I'm about half done! It would be great if I could finish it up today or tomorrow so I can start on the next one (which is going to take the most work) and finish number 2.

Have a sneak peek of project 3! :D

Also, I got my yarn bowl from blueroompottery on Etsy. It's pretty awesome...and huge!

Day for the Dads

I always have a really difficult time getting something for my Dad. Be it Christmas, his birthday, or Father's Day. That is because he has a tendency to purchase things he wants himself when he finds them. (Of course, I have this tendency too...drives my friends bonkers.) So this year instead of my working slowly to restore his James Bond book collection, I got him something a bit more sentimental. Which considering he and I don't overly do sentimental is rather amazing.

Etsy had a cool gift suggestion post up for a bit too.

I really like the quote. It just resonated with me.

It was funny yesterday since Dad was preaching at the evening service. He did a really great father's day sermon concerning God as the Father. It was about how a father is in the family and what his role is. Little did I know (a month ago when I purchased it) how much the little quote would match up.

Of course he got in a bit about our adventure on the highway. A week before we were driving back from a friend's graduation and I felt a shaking in the floorboards. When Dad started driving after dinner, it got worse. Over the next 50 miles or so it migrated to the passenger side and the steering wheel was shaking. When we pulled off at a rest stop there was a popping sound. I thought maybe the tire had blown. But nothing seemed wrong. We went in to the bathrooms and when we came out the driver side front tire was canted. Dad found a lug nut sheared off. I noticed that all of them were gone. Needless to say that God was with us that drive.

Between that and his other stories interspersed with scripture, it was a lovely sermon. We were discussing afterwards about how it can effect people. Especially since one lady said that her family never said I love you, taking their cues from her father. I told him that it all about saying something and hoping it reaches someone when they need it to.

Overall it was a nice father's day. We hadn't had a proper celebration in few years with me at school and various activities arising in summer. I gave the keyring at lunch and when Mom read the quote out Dad was silly and acted like a tree in a storm. I think he really liked it. Said he could even put it on his keys since it wouldn't take up loads of space in his pocket. Win for me!

Mystery Project 1 Complete!

I changed the project for Mystery 1. I also finished it and gifted it. That's right, Project 1 was the 11th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver! :D It was a nice, fun, quick knit. I also got to use some of the yarn in my stash. I hope to make another one at some point.

I got the pattern off Ravelry. When I presented it to the recipient today (during a Dr. Who/ Torchwood marathon) the first thing he did was point and sonic! XD Marvelous!

Meanwhile, I've finished half of the Mystery Project 2. And I'm working to cast on Mystery Project 3. I hope to get them down since I think 4 is going to take me a while. I have to figure out how to size it up correctly for the recipient. Project 5 shouldn't been too intense. I'm glad I've figured them out now.

I also have a few random projects in my queue. I have a co-worker I'd like to make a lightsaber for and another some flip top mittens (at his request). Just call me the little knitting machine!

Mystery Project 2

I've decided to put Clockwork Skies on hold till I make some head way with the Pay It Forward Projects. That being said, Project 1 is not very portable. Thus that is one that I will have to complete at home. However, the other projects I've been contemplating are, so I've cast on Project 2 and been letting my little needles work steadily. :)

I decided to work them in alphabetical order. I think Project 1 is going to take me the longest. It seems to require the most work, especially as it is knit flat. The other ones I've looked at doing are knit in the round. I really like knitting in the round as I am a slow purler.

Pictures to come when projects are completed/given. :D

Have to finish one first!

I had a co-worker show my this article from The Washington Post a little while back.

She was really funny about poking me to self publish. Which would be amazing if I actually had a manuscript completed to a point I could edit the damn thing. However, writing likes to stop in the middle and railroad me. I always seem to have vague ideas about where I'd like to go, but a nice road block get thrown down on the way. :P

I suppose this should be a nice little shove to get typing.

Odds and Ends

Every so often I tool around Etsy, since it is really inspiring as well as awesome. There are some really amazing things on there. A little while ago, GeekCraft had a post about a Dr. Who Companion bracelet. I've recently been watching Dr. Who, and have become thoroughly addicted. It is really entertaining. I do love this bracelet, but know that I have nowhere to wear it. :(

She's also got a few different charm bracelets with other features, such as Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland. I really like that she explains the reasoning behind the charms too on a few of them.

I especially like the bookmarks. Again, I have little use for one since I have a Kindle that is very much dearly loved, but they are still very neat.

There are different styles and everything. :)

However, I did get a pair of earrings that were Harry Potter inspired. :) She's got lots of nice little things that are cute and interesting.

And speaking of earring, there was a really cute pair that were inspired by Breaking Dawn. If I actually like the series I would get them since they are really rather awesome, but I couldn't get through the third book. >_< Twilight hurts my brain. I do want to finish them, mostly since I have friends that like them. However I also like to be decently informed if I'm going to bitch about something. *sigh* But the books have still been a nice art inspiration for many. I like where the is creativity flowing! Just look at the little chess pieces!

New Tee Everyday!? Sign me up!

A former co-worker recently posted about purchasing a new tee-shirt. Once I saw it, I had to have it. Only downside, I won't have it when I go to the Supernatural Convention this coming weekend. ;_; Ah well, it was still too amazing to pass up.

Anywho, got this tee off of RIPT Apparel:

Mine, mine, mine. *grabby hands*

Can I just say that I will be checking back. So many amusing tees, but all gone.
